How to play
Sixty seconds. One rule.
No timer, no lives, no losing. Just a number and the question of how clever you want to be about it.
01
Drag a path
Start on any tile and move to a neighbour — up, down, left, right. No diagonals, no revisits.
02
Land on exactly 21
Your tiles add up as you go. Overshoot and the path turns red. Stop on 21 and it locks green.
03
Longer is better
Every grid has a lazy three-tile answer and a clever one. Your score is how many tiles you used. Then share it.
FAQ
Questions people ask.
How do you play XXI?
You get a 4×4 grid of numbers. Start on any tile and drag to a neighbouring tile — up, down, left or right, never diagonally and never back over a tile you have used. The numbers add up as you go. Stop on exactly 21 and the path locks green. Go over and it turns red, so lift your finger and try another route. There is one grid per day and it is the same for everyone.
What counts as a good score in XXI?
The number of tiles in your path. Every daily grid has a quick three-tile answer and at least one much longer one, so 21 in 3 means you found the obvious route and 21 in 8 means you found the clever one. There is no losing — only how clever you were about it.
Is XXI free, and do I need an account?
Free, and no account. Open the link and play. Your streak and stats are saved in your browser on the web and on your device in the iOS app.
How does sharing work without spoiling the puzzle?
Your result is an emoji grid showing the shape of your path and how many tiles it used, not the numbers. Friends see that you did it in 7 and have to find a 7 of their own on the same grid.
Is XXI a blackjack or card game?
No. XXI borrows the number 21 and nothing else — there are no cards, no dealer and no betting. It is a daily number puzzle in the spirit of Wordle, played on a grid of digits.
