Daily Puzzle Games Like Wordle: The Number and Logic Edition

Updated 4 October 2026 · about 5 min read

Wordle proved the shape: one puzzle a day, the same for everyone, done in a couple of minutes, with a result you can paste into a group chat without spoiling it. Since then the format has spread far beyond words. If you want that same morning ritual with numbers and logic instead of letters, these are the ones worth adding to the rotation.

Nerdle

Wordle with equations. You guess an eight-character calculation such as 12+35=47 and get the same green, purple and grey feedback that Wordle uses for letters. It rewards the same deductive habits as Wordle but with arithmetic, and the "mini" and "speed" variants keep it under two minutes. Can be failed, which gives it a Wordle-like edge.

Mathler

Closer to a riddle: you are given a target number and must find the six-character equation that produces it, with feedback on which digits and operators are correctly placed. Because several equations can reach the same target, the game is as much about which route the setter chose as about the arithmetic.

The New York Times Connections and the Mini

Connections is a grouping puzzle — sixteen words, four hidden categories — and it is the closest thing to Wordle's cultural reach right now. The Mini is a five-by-five crossword that most people finish in under two minutes. Neither is a number game, but both show how far "one a day, same for everyone" stretches.

Daily Sudoku and Killer Sudoku

The oldest daily number puzzle there is, now served up by dozens of sites and apps with a fresh grid every morning. Killer Sudoku adds caged sums to the standard grid and is the closest relative to XXI on this list: both are about making exact totals out of a small set of digits in a confined space.

XXI

Ours, so take the enthusiasm with a grain of salt. XXI is a 4×4 grid of digits, one per day. Draw a single path through neighbouring tiles that adds up to exactly 21. You can always do it; the score is how many tiles you used, because every grid hides a lazy three-tile answer and a clever seven- or eight-tile one. There is no failing and no timer, which makes it gentler than Wordle on a bad morning, and the share is an emoji grid of your path's shape rather than the numbers. The rules are here.

What they all have in common

Every game on this list obeys the same five constraints, and that is not a coincidence. One puzzle a day, so there is scarcity. The same puzzle for everyone, so there is something to compare. A solve that fits inside a coffee. No account, so the link is the whole onboarding. And a shareable result that gives away your performance without giving away the answer. Remove any one of those and the ritual breaks; keep all five and almost any mechanic will work.

Questions

What makes a daily puzzle game work?

One puzzle a day that is the same for everyone, a two-minute solve, no account, and a result you can share without spoiling the answer. Scarcity does the rest — because there is only one, you come back tomorrow.

Are daily puzzle games free?

Most are free to play on the web, with optional subscriptions for archives, extra puzzles or an ad-free app. The ones in this list are all free to play the daily puzzle.

Is XXI harder than Wordle?

Different rather than harder. Wordle can be failed; XXI cannot. The challenge in XXI is not whether you reach 21 but how long a path you reach it with, so a casual player and a competitive one play the same grid at different depths.
